Global Grids Catalyst

Global Grids Catalyst (GGC) is a philanthropic hub and regrantor for modernising electric grid planning, deployment and operations worldwide. GGC provides grants, strategic advice and network support to civil society organizations, the private sector and international institutions. The initiative is hosted by PIE and led by Executive Director Dr Anand Gopal and staff at the GGC Secretariat.

Electricity grids are a cornerstone of the clean energy transition. After decades of underinvestment, global attention is now turning to grid expansion and modernisation – making electricity systems smarter, more reliable and able to support increasing use of electricity as countries develop and transition away from fossil fuels. GGC aims to double global investment in grids and deliver an additional 25 million kilometres of grids by 2030.

While operating globally, the initiative places particular emphasis on Emerging Markets and Developing Countries, and parts of the European Union. Priority countries include Global South countries from South, East and Southeast Asia regions as well as Latin America, along with countries like South Korea and Japan. GGC also supports transnational grid interconnections and operations.

GCC is launching a $2M Innovation Fund to accelerate grid modernisation in the following key emerging economies: China, India, Pakistan, Poland, South Korea, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Australia.

We are seeking bold, testable ideas from civil society and private sector partners that address policy, finance, and planning bottlenecks.

Note: This fund does not support software, hardware technology, or physical R&D.
